Oppenheimer: Father of the atomic bomb or politics?

Good afternoon dreamers! I hope the new week finds you recharged and motivated for the upcoming task or the laziness a good holiday might bring you.

I found the start of the week a bit chilly, but as a saying goes by in Romania after the Christian holiday of “Face changing” (sixth of August) or in different zones of St. Marie (15th August) fall comes. However, I always waited for my holiday to end, 20th August, to declare it fall.

But, enough with the chit-chat, and let’s discuss today’s topic and that’s it: Oppenheimer.

As mentioned yesterday when we talked about Barbie, I’m not a movie critic and all of these are personal opinions. Also, I’m not transforming my blog into a movies blog, however, I created a new category because I find it very appropriate for the next few months.

Now, that we’ve cleared that out, I think it’s time to declare that I loved Oppenheimer a little bit more than Barbie. And the jokes on the internet about being easier to understand geopolitics and quantum physics than watching Barbie are half true.

For those who don’t know Oppenheimer is a movie based on reality about the creation of the atomic bomb in World War II, and its consequences in politics.

Yeah, this movie is about politics more than the genius that created the masterpiece.

I will start with what I loved about the movie.

For those who have some general knowledge about the world, like who did what, and who is who, but not details like periods in history, this movie makes it easier to understand that Einstein isn’t an oldie and he lived in the past Century. He and my grandparents shared some years on this Earth.

Another thing that I love about the movie is that it shows the complexity of research. It shows what teamwork can do and what a good leader can achieve out of his team. After all, in Los Alamos, Oppenheimer became a leader more than a researcher.

This movie also does what Barbie couldn’t (Sorry not sorry), he empowered women. Why and how? There is a part where Oppie asks for a village to be created so the wives can come too. He did it because he knew the basics, like Maslow’s pyramid. To achieve greatness, you need to have basic needs fulfilled, even sexual ones.

Yeah, yeah, he kinda sexualized them, but he doesn’t stop here. Because most of these women weren’t ordinary, they were researchers too and they were educated. So, besides following their men so they can get laid and have their basic needs (food and housing) assured, they became part of the Trinity project too.

They got jobs too. I’m not saying it’s perfect. But it’s a movie based on reality, so at the time, it was what it was, and this movie manage to show that women contributed too in this process.

Knowing what truly the atomic bomb can be, am I proud of what my kind did? No! We should’ve kicked their asses and destroyed the project that can end our world. Knowing exactly what they knew, am I proud of them achieving this? Yeah, I am.

Now, what I hate about this movie.

Well, it’s about politics! And it’s TRUE GOD DAMN IT!

Unfortunately, this movie, the same as DON’T LOOK UP, (remember that movie?) shows exactly how rotten the system is. And it’s not only in the US, it’s almost everywhere. And it’s frustrating because it shows how unimportant all of us are in their faces.

In the first part of the movie, Oppenheimer creates the atomic bomb. Good for him. The second, it’s about the vendetta Lewis Strauss had upon him, and how he destroyed Oppie’s career only to make him shut up and not tell the world that “Hei, we created the bomb, but maybe just freaking maybe, let’s stop here cause we might destroy the world we know. Trust me, I know what I’ve created!”. No, the fight for supremacy won, and Oppenheimer was shut down.

I think that I wanted to get up and go out of the theater so bad for the last 45 minutes, but I stayed only to see how it ends. But it was cruel.

Yeah, Oppenheimer, it’s a good movie. Not as good as he was rated on IMDB, but good cause it managed to open the curtains a bit more and we saw what was happening backstage.

It’s worth seeing, but remember it’s a political movie rather than a movie about the Father of the atomic bomb.

I will stop here with a movie review, for a while at least. These two movies were and still are the talk of the moment so I needed to see them and I had formed an opinion I decided to share with you.

Tomorrow we will get back to reality, and I will share with you what I’ve done on the weekend and a new place for you to visit in Romania.

Until then, have #adreamerlife,

Cristiana Apreutese
