Previously The interview
Walking towards the exit, I stop by Denise to thank her and say goodbye!
– I hope you are in luck. Here, we have a friendly environment; you might be just the right pop of diversity.
-Do you think so? Do you believe a girl like me fits this small-town family business?
-You’ll be perfect! Just have faith!
-Thanks! By the way, do you know any affordable and fast car services? I had a little accident in the morning.
– Oh, so sorry. Everything okay? Says she with a genuine concern in her big eyes.
-Yeah, some Barbie girl was probably distracted, didn’t see me at the stop, and took me from behind. It’s not a big deal, but it has to be done.
-Sure thing. And she hasn’t given you her insurance?
-Long story short, her knight in shiny Armani offered, but I refused. I don’t want to be perceived as the new girl in town who takes advantage of wealthy people.
-Okay, but principles will cost you money. Here, he’s my brother. Tell him I sent you, and he’ll help you! She offers me an old business card with oil stains on it.
-He’s on the main street, in a big English-style garage, just a few minutes from here.
-Thank you so much; you are a sweetie!
-You’re welcome. I hope to see you on Monday! Have a nice day!
-Same. Have a nice day, and you too!
As I drive through the main street, I have the opportunity to see the town in its element. Fridays are filled with teens and college students who come home. Terraces are full, and stores too. This brings even more life to the beautiful streets. Houses are a mix of old-style, colored Art Nouveau, and some more modern apartment buildings. A vivid blend that gives a special, cozy vibe. This town is like a lived-in home: carefully chosen pieces that look like they won’t fit but belong together. The main street has big chestnut trees on both sides that offer solid shade from the summer sun.
At number 78, a vast building appears. It’s covered in wenge bricks that give that British vibe.
-That must be it, I say to myself while parking in front. I get out of the car and walk towards the massive garage doors. Working on a vehicle, there is someone who I believe is Dennis’s brother. Familiar-looking, with dark hair, dark eyes, and a huge smile. Why do they smile so much?
His overalls are covered in oil stains, and his hands are dirty, but they don’t look disgraceful.
– Hi! You must be Alice. Denise called me and told me you’ll arrive. I’m Alex, her brother!
Of course, Denise called, I think, while rolling my eyes in my mind.
– Hi, yes, I am Alice; nice to meet you!
-So, how can I help you?
-Well, this morning, I was in a minor fender bender. Nothing serious, just the back of my car.
-Let’s see then!
Once he sees my car, his face changes.
Did you drive this in the city? He says it while touching my rear bumper and easily pulling.
-Yes, it is not a big deal… Is it?
-I don’t know. What do you think? And while telling me this, he pulls all the bumper down without effort.
-It’s just metal; the car is working.
-Yes, the car is working, and it’s just metal, but metal is also your evacuation, which was hit. It’s not that bad; I’m just surprised the police didn’t stop you. Do you have the other one’s insurance?
-Well, no. It’s going to be from my own pocket.
-You said…
-Yeah, I know what I said. I interrupt him as I become increasingly irritated with the story.
Can you help me or not?
– I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I can help you, but I’ll need some time. I already have three other cars besides my sister’s boss’s, so I won’t be ready for at least a week.
-Fu… Yeah, it’s okay. It’s going to be OK. Here’s the key and my number. Call me when it’s ready.
-Sure thing. Do you need a ride?
-No, I need you to work so I can get my car sooner.
He bursts out laughing, and his eyes light up. The sound of his voice is childish, and a playful tone takes over it.
-Fiesty, I like it! My sister was right about you being something else. Well, the offer still stands, even if I imagine you prefer to walk home rather than accept help.
-You do get me, I say while laughing back and rolling my eyes.
