Mud Volcanoes of Buzău: A Surreal and Fascinating Natural Wonder

Hello dreamers! How are you handling the heat wave that’s melting the planet down? Well, sure we can give up on some more plastic, and “cancel” some small producers that are using plastic, instead of looking up in the sky. And no, I don’t mean to ask God, or whoever you pray to, for forgiveness, but to watch the planes… Yeah, those cute little polluters.

Sorry if I am too dramatic for your taste, but being a travel article, I think it’s my moral duty to ask you to please use other means of transportation if available.

Studies showed that us, normal people if all of us applied sustainable and eco-friendly principles of life, we would have an impact below 30%. The main problem is private planes, and that’s a fact!

I am a little bitter cause for the last two weeks I couldn’t do anything in my apartment without crossing the 30-degree temperature. And sleeping at 30, it’s magical, but dark magical, so you had to witness this intro!

Anyhow, today’s article is about one of my May travels, but as a busy teacher, please excuse me for the delay!

Nestled amidst the captivating landscapes of Buzău County, Romania, lies a geological phenomenon that defies ordinary description – the Mud Volcanoes. Often referred to as “mofete” or “pâcle,” these otherworldly formations offer a glimpse into the hidden depths of our planet, beckoning adventurous souls to embark on an unforgettable journey.

Unlike their fiery counterparts, mud volcanoes are not fueled by molten rock but rather by a combination of natural gases, primarily methane, that rise from deep underground deposits. As these gases encounter water and clay, they erupt to the surface, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of bubbling mud pools, miniature mud geysers, and otherworldly landscapes.

Two primary sites captivate visitors seeking an encounter with these mud marvels:

  • Pâclele Mari: The largest of the mud volcano reserves, Pâclele Mari boasts an array of active “apparatuses,” some reaching heights of up to 3 meters. The lunar-like terrain dotted with bubbling mud pools and miniature craters offers an unforgettable sensory experience.
  • Pâclele Mici: While smaller in size, Pâclele Mici is renowned for its mud craters teeming with liquid mud. The contrast between the vibrant hues of the mud and the surrounding greenery creates a mesmerizing visual effect.

Beyond their captivating allure, the mud volcanoes of Buzău also hold therapeutic value. The mud, rich in minerals, has been traditionally used for its healing properties, believed to alleviate skin ailments and promote joint health, however, it’s not a proven fact!

Planning Your Mud Volcano Adventure

To fully immerse yourself in the wonders of the mud volcanoes, consider these tips:

  • Embrace the Elements: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for walking on uneven terrain. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, as the sun can be intense depending on the season. Also, take into consideration that you might encounter windfall.
  • Respect the Environment: Leave the mud volcanoes as you found them. Avoid touching or removing the mud, as this can disrupt the delicate ecosystem.
  • Capture the Memories: Bring your camera to capture the unique and otherworldly beauty of the mud volcanoes.
  • Enter fee: The tax you pay to enter is paid once for both locations and it’s about 1 euro.
  • Program: You can visit the Natural park from 8 AM to 8 PM.
  • Accommodation: The rural area that surrounds the volcanos provides different offers of accommodation!

The Mud Volcanoes of Buzău await, ready to unveil their secrets to those who dare to explore. Embark on an adventure that will transport you to a realm of bubbling mud, otherworldly landscapes, and hidden wonders. Discover the magic of nature’s artistry and create memories that will last a lifetime here in Romania!
